About Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC)
Pakistan has a growing nuclear energy program and has been developing nuclear power since the 1950s. The Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) is responsible for the development and regulation of nuclear power in the country. Pakistan is not a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, but it has developed nuclear weapons.
Pakistan’s nuclear power plants currently generate about 5% of the country’s electricity, but the government plans to increase this to about 30% by 2030. The country has two operational nuclear power plants, Chashma Nuclear Power Plant and Karachi Nuclear Power Plant, with a combined capacity of 1,360 MW. In addition, Pakistan has several other nuclear power projects under construction or in the planning stages, including the Chashma Nuclear Power Plant Unit 3 and 4, and the Karachi Nuclear Power Plant Units 2 and 3.
Pakistan also has a nuclear fuel cycle, which includes the mining of uranium and the production of heavy water. The country has several uranium mines and mills, and a heavy water production facility. Pakistan’s nuclear power program is closely monitored by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Pakistan’s nuclear weapons program has been a source of international concern, as the country has not signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). In the past, Pakistan has been accused of transferring nuclear technology to other countries, such as North Korea and Iran. The country has maintained that its nuclear weapons program is for defensive purposes and a deterrent against its neighbor and rival, India, which also possesses nuclear weapons.
In recent years, Pakistan has expressed its commitment to the peaceful use of nuclear energy and has been actively engaged in international efforts to promote nuclear safety and non-proliferation. The country has also signed several agreements with other nations to cooperate on nuclear energy projects and research. Despite this, Pakistan’s nuclear weapons program and the potential for nuclear proliferation remains a major concern for the international community.
