Pakistan has a growing nuclear energy program and has been developing nuclear power since the 1950s. The Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) is responsible for the development and regulation of nuclear power in the country. Pakistan is not a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, but it has developed nuclear weapons.

Pakistan’s nuclear power plants currently generate about 5% of the country’s electricity, but the government plans to increase this to about 30% by 2030. The country has two operational nuclear power plants, Chashma Nuclear Power Plant and Karachi Nuclear Power Plant, with a combined capacity of 1,360 MW. In addition, Pakistan has several other nuclear power projects under construction or in the planning stages, including the Chashma Nuclear Power Plant Unit 3 and 4, and the Karachi Nuclear Power Plant Units 2 and 3.

Pakistan also has a nuclear fuel cycle, which includes the mining of uranium and the production of heavy water. The country has several uranium mines and mills, and a heavy water production facility.
